“It’s not fair!” This is the lament of countless children when they perceive that a sibling or classmate is receiving more. Do special needs for one mean less love for another? This is the question explored in this short children's story of three zoo animals. They learn that being equally loved doesn't necessarily mean that they're treated the exact same. Rather, true love is expressed when each animal gets what they need.

We were looking for a book for our 6 year old to really try to get across the point that fair is not equal. I do think that this book does a really great job explaining that and how if everything was "equal" it wouldn't be fair. I wish they talked about more issues other than food in the book to kind of show examples in other parts that would relate to his life, but overall, great book with a great messageProduct details

Fair is Fair eBook Sonny Varela Peter Mahr Reviews
I love how this book illustrates fairness to children in a practical way. The story is a great reminder that we all have different needs and sometimes being fair is following those needs, not a certain amount. The illustrations are gorgeous as well!
Love this book!
This is a good book for teaching kids about fairness. I love it.
We're fighting the "It's not fair!" battle at my house, and this simple, adorable story is an immense help. We ask how much hay we really need as a code for the always popular refrain, "Fair doesn't mean equal." I definitely recommend, especially if you're dealing with a child fixated on his/her idea of fair.
This is a great book to teach children that being fair is not always getting the same. Being fair is meeting the special needs of each child. I do think there should be an 'a' before wheelbarrow. Great book and I highly recommend!
This book was great for our 8,7,4 year old who are always comparing everything with each other. They enjoyed the illustrations and we had a good discussion about the message of the book. Two of our children have special needs that require some extra attention and this book helped illustrate we love all our children just the same, and give them what they need.
We bought this book because my almost 6 year old was having trouble understanding that fairness is not sameness. I have a 15 month old daughter that gets more attention at times and has different needs, of course, and I needed a story that helped explain why both kids weren't going to get the same treatment at the same time, every time. We needed to get away from if one gets new clothes/shoes, the other gets new clothes/shoes.
It took a couple of tries, but the message finally broke through. I think my 6yo needed a couple reads to fully grasp it. Since then, however, things have improved. She no longer expects sameness.
