For author Zakiah Sayeed, baring her soul to the world, releasing these intensely personal thoughts and feelings, is a freeing experience. Within these pages is solace and inspiration, happiness and sorrow, and a warm feeling of connection and shared understanding. Free verse poetry and flash fiction, it relies on stream of consciousness and ethereal connection cascading into awareness rather than preconceived rhythm and rhyme, her words true to the cadences of being, each a pulse—a reflection—that when viewed in their whole portrays a stunning breadth of emotion with resonance and beauty. Combined with prose and artfully crafted letters that provide insight into her life, her children, and her grandchildren, her fearless honesty displays for all to see the truth of her being.

Stray Thoughts/Winged Words
By Zakiah Sayeed

"Stray Thoughts/Winged Words" is a book of love songs - not only distant, or close, or soured lovers, but also of a love of life. It is also the prize of love from the privileged few who are reflective are able to experience and then share with others. It is a combination of poems and narratives with insight, humor, and floods of compassion. Her empathy, from a left brained doctor, is amazing and rare. She mixes her recollections of her growing up in India with her experiences in the Midwest making you realize that we are all the same in our emotions and feelings and values.

With her narrative on hugs for children going off to college, after grabbing you by your heartstrings, she subtly turns it around into a reflective of questioning too late her own mother's feelings as she went off to college and then to the United States. Her ability to empathize is shown in that her poems may be from a woman or from a man and will include grandsons, brothers, co-workers, patients, friends, and the vulnerables viewed throughout our lives.

As you read these poems, you will get such an urge to share them that you realize that many of these are meant to be read aloud to a special someone in your life. She is adroit in creating beautiful new word-images and metaphors such as "these hands flutter/like a butterfly with clipped wings", and "Ugly memories/Weave through my neurons/Like bad thread through a rug." These are the reflections from a reflecting soul.

One is invited to enter a dream world of love and lovers without the constraints of time or space. She is a poet who truly loves life, and recognizes the ironies of love and life. These poems and narratives are a love fest and a sensualist's delight as she describes new worlds of sights, sounds, songs, smells, and compassion.

Stray Thoughts/Winged Words edition by Zakiah Sayeed Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Zakiah Sayeed is one of my favorites -- her writings reflect a culture very different than ours in the US, and one that is increasingly important here. The sensitivity with which she tells stories is amazing, and gives us some extraordinary insights into her life in each of the two cultures. Her childhood and family memories are wonderfully portrayed -- one can almost smell the aromas and hear the sounds of a place many thousand miles away -- and feel the emotions of a completely foreign way of life.
Purchasing this book was wayyyy more than just worth it. I wish i had done it much earlier. So many words and lines in there that make me want to sit in solitary and feel them. Feel the pain. Feel the excitement. Feel the love. The poetry the author writes are absolutely intoxicating. They take you to another world to another era. This book is definitely one of the few classics in my collection that I shall cherish forever. A must buy.
The author of this book is a friend of mine, but I was reading her poetry a long time before we became friends. I met her through the blogging website Xanga. I used to read her blog entries whenever someone on my friends list would recommend them and every time I was blown away by the beautiful poetry she had posted.

And behind those beautiful words is a truly beautiful person, who I am glad to call a friend. So, it is my pleasure to review this book.

The book is filled with poetry and stories, some stories about her memories and grandchildren and all are wonderful to read. Letters From the Tooth Fairy was one I really enjoyed, as I remember being a kid and losing a teeth and being excited for the tooth fairy to come. I never saw her, but knowing the tooth fairy was at my house was enough. Another story, entitled Poor Foreigners, I thought expressed really well how easily people can stereotype another person.

The poetry was beautiful; I don't think I can pick a favorite poem. Zakiah's poems about love are just amazing and beautifully written. There is a poem entitled Mario, which made me laugh. Being a fan of the Mario video games, I really enjoyed it. And then there is the poem entitled 9/11, it was powerful and moving. A few times throughout reading this book I became teary eye, but I loved each poem and story, whether they were sad or happy. This book is just simply amazing and I can't recommend it enough.
The author hands to us the reader, the key to her most private recesses of her heart and mind. In this volume of beautifully written prose and poetry, be prepared to experience both the laughter of delight and the tears of painful memories as you experience vicariously the deep emotions shared in this special journal. As you see differences in cultural experiences, you also see that at the heart of it all we have in common our same struggles and joys. I recommend this book!
"Stray Thoughts/Winged Words" is one of the most beautifully written books of poetry I've ever had the pleasure of reading. To read this book is to know the author's heart and soul. There have been so many instances while reading this that I'd find myself smiling because what she wrote gives me a sense of recognition and joy in my heart. There are people and things we encounter in life that leave an everlasting mark on our souls.... this author and this book are two of those things. Do yourself a favor and let this book be one of your must reads. Simply fantastic.
